AI SEO Services: What They Are, What They Cost, and What Actually Works

Right now, someone is asking ChatGPT a question about your industry. ChatGPT is picking which websites to cite in its answer. If your site is not one of them, that visitor will never know you exist.

What Are AI SEO Services?

AI SEO services help your website appear in AI-generated search answers. When someone asks ChatGPT "best CRM for small businesses" or asks Perplexity "is Salesforce worth it," the AI reads dozens of web pages and cites a handful. AI SEO is the practice of making your pages the ones that get cited.

This is not hypothetical. We tested it. We asked 250 questions to three AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode) and recorded every website they cited. 10,138 total citations. Then we visited all 10,293 candidate pages and measured 66 things about each one to figure out why AI picked some and skipped others.

The result: there are specific, measurable things about a web page that predict whether AI will cite it. And most of them are different from what traditional SEO teaches you to optimize for. That is what AI SEO services are for.

This is different from traditional SEO in specific, measurable ways:

What is different Traditional SEO AI SEO
Goal Rank in Google's top 10 Get cited in AI answers
What matters most Backlinks, keywords, domain authority Comparison structure, statistics, objective tone, topical breadth
How pages are evaluated Google's ranking algorithm AI reads your page directly and decides if it is worth citing
Where users find you Google search results (blue links) ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Claude answers
How you measure success Position rankings, click-through rate Citation appearances across multiple AI platforms
The big surprise Google rank #1 = 68.8% AI citation rate. But Google rank does NOT guarantee AI citation. 31% of #1 pages are NOT cited. The #1 predictor of AI citation is not your Google rank. It is how many related searches your site ranks for (topical breadth).
The bottom line: Traditional SEO and AI SEO are complementary. You need traditional SEO to rank on Google, which gets you into the candidate pool AI draws from. Then you need AI SEO to make sure your pages are the ones AI actually selects from that pool.

Why Most AI SEO Advice Is Wrong

Most AI SEO advice is based on assumptions, not data. We ran five experiments to find out what actually predicts AI citation. Three of them failed. Each failure revealed a different problem with how the industry measures AI visibility.

What the industry says What our data shows Source
"Make your site faster for AI" Page speed has zero effect on AI citation within the same Google position band (p > 0.39 in all bands) Experiment M
"Add author bylines for AI trust" No significant effect on AI citation Experiment M, all 4 position bands
"87% of ChatGPT citations come from Bing" 27.4% with fan-out tracking. 68% comes from training data. Bing Replication Study
"Get into Google's Knowledge Graph" Knowledge Graph recognition has zero predictive power (AUC = 0.577, barely above coin flip) Knowledge Graph Study
"Optimize your brand page for AI" 93.4% of brand-query citations go to THIRD-PARTY sites, not your own Experiment 2E
"Higher PageRank = more AI citations" Wrong direction. High-authority domains are LESS likely to be cited Experiment L
This is why research matters. Without it, you optimize for things that do not work and ignore things that do.

What Actually Predicts AI Citation

Our largest study (10,293 pages, 250 queries, 3 AI platforms) found six page-level features that predict citation in ALL four Google position bands:

What we measured How much it matters What it means
Comparison structure d = 0.43 Pages with "X vs Y" tables, side-by-side breakdowns get cited more (strongest signal)
Query term coverage d = 0.42 Pages that contain the exact words people search for get cited more
Subheading depth d = 0.19 to 0.40 Pages with more H3 subheadings get cited more (cited pages have 2x the subheadings)
Primary source score d = 0.27 Pages that produce original data get cited more than pages that summarize others
Word count d = 0.20 Cited pages average about 2,000 words (not 300, not 5,000)
Blog tone (NEGATIVE) d = -0.30 to -0.37 "I think" and "in my experience" writing reduces citation. AI prefers reference material, not diary entries

And at the website level, the single biggest predictor:

How many related Google searches your site ranks for AI citation rate
1 search 34%
4 to 7 searches 87%
16+ searches 100%
This is topical authority. Sites that rank for many related questions are trusted by AI platforms. Sites that rank for one question are not. This finding alone (Spearman rho = 0.341, p = 2.6 x 10-70) is more predictive than any other signal we have ever tested.

What a Full AI SEO Engagement Looks Like

AI SEO is not one thing. It is a pipeline with four stages. Most agencies only cover one stage (citation monitoring). A full engagement covers all four.

1

Input: AI Bot Crawling

Which AI bots visit your site, how often, which pages they read

If bots are not crawling your site, nothing downstream matters. We use BotSight to track 15+ AI bots in real time via edge middleware.

2

Processing: Content Optimization

Whether your pages have the features AI platforms prefer

The 6 page-level signals determine which pages get selected from the candidate pool. We use the Experiment M framework: comparison structure, subheadings, statistics, objective tone.

3

Output: Citation Monitoring

Whether your pages actually appear in AI answers

The measurable outcome across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Claude. We use multi-platform citation scraping (10+ sessions per query for statistical reliability).

4

Conversion: AI-Attributed Revenue

Whether AI-sourced visitors convert

The business impact that justifies the investment. We use BotSight AI engagement and revenue attribution to connect crawls to conversions.

Most agencies skip stages 1 and 4 entirely. They check if your URL appears in ChatGPT (stage 3) and recommend content changes (stage 2). They have no way to know if AI bots even visit your site, and no way to connect AI visibility to revenue.

AI SEO Services Comparison

Not all AI SEO services are created equal. Here is how full-funnel AI SEO compares to citation-only AI SEO and traditional SEO.

The Cost of Waiting

Every month without AI SEO optimization, your competitors are building the topical authority signal that AI platforms use to decide who to trust. Our data shows this is a compounding effect:

87%

AI citation rate for domains that rank for 4+ related queries

34%

AI citation rate for domains that rank for just 1 query

53pt

Gap that widens over time as topical authority compounds

If a competitor builds a content cluster of 10 to 15 pages around your core topic before you do, they cross the 87% threshold and you stay at 34%. That gap is difficult to close once established.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI SEO Services

What are AI SEO services?

AI SEO services optimize your website to appear in AI-generated search answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Claude. This is different from traditional SEO because AI platforms evaluate pages using different signals than Google's ranking algorithm. Our research on 10,293 pages identified 6 specific page-level features that predict AI citation, and these form the basis of AI SEO optimization.

How is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO optimizes for Google's top 10 using backlinks, keywords, and technical signals. AI SEO optimizes for citation by AI platforms. The key difference: ranking #1 on Google gives you a 68.8% AI citation rate, but 31% of #1 pages are NOT cited. AI platforms evaluate comparison structure, statistics density, objective tone, and topical breadth, not backlinks or click-through rates. The two are complementary: traditional SEO gets you into the candidate pool, AI SEO gets you selected from it.

How much do AI SEO services cost?

Pricing varies by scope. A one-time AI SEO audit typically ranges from $1,500 to $5,000. Ongoing AI SEO optimization retainers range from $3,000 to $10,000 per month depending on the number of pages, platforms monitored, and content production needs. We offer a free AI Visibility Quick Check as a starting point to help scope the right engagement level.

How long before AI SEO shows results?

AI bot crawl changes are visible within days (you can track them in real time with BotSight). Citation changes typically take 2 to 8 weeks depending on the platform. Perplexity recrawls frequently (FAQ pages get approximately 2x more recrawls). ChatGPT's training data updates on a longer cycle. Google AI Mode inherits Google's existing index. The topical authority signal (content clusters ranking for multiple queries) takes 3 to 6 months to build but has the highest long-term impact.

Do I still need traditional SEO?

Yes. Traditional SEO and AI SEO are complementary, not competing strategies. Our research found that the #1 predictor of AI domain trust is SERP co-occurrence: how many Google searches your site ranks for. You cannot build this signal without traditional SEO. The causal chain is: SEO (rank for more queries) leads to SERP breadth leads to AI trust (87%+ citation rate at 4+ queries) leads to AI citation. Traditional SEO builds the foundation. AI SEO optimizes what is built on top.

Which AI platforms matter most?

All four major platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Claude) matter because they cite almost entirely different sources. Our research found only 1.4% URL overlap between platforms. A page cited by ChatGPT is unlikely to be cited by Perplexity and vice versa. Multi-platform optimization is necessary because each platform has different retrieval architecture, different content preferences, and different citation behavior.

Can you guarantee AI citation?

No. AI citation is probabilistic, not guaranteed. Any agency that promises specific citation counts is overpromising. What we can guarantee is that our optimization recommendations are based on the largest publicly available dataset of AI citation behavior (10,293 pages, 250 queries, 3 platforms, 66 measured features) and that the page-level signals we optimize for are statistically significant across all four Google position bands. Implementing these signals measurably increases citation probability, but no intervention guarantees a specific outcome.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the academic term for AI SEO, introduced by researchers at Princeton (Aggarwal et al., 2024). It describes the practice of optimizing web content for visibility in AI-generated search responses. Our research (10,293-page study) both validated and challenged the original GEO framework: statistics density matters (as Princeton found), but citation density and quotation density do not replicate as predictors on real AI platforms. The comparison structure signal (our strongest finding) was not identified in the original GEO paper.
